Bodhgaya is proably the most interesting of all the holy sites, associated with the life of Buddha, being much more of a working Buddhist centre than an archeological site. It`s also the most important Buddhist pilgrimage destination in the World. Bodhgaya is small and quite but growing rapidely and accumulating all the usual 'tourism paraphernalia' however it is still a pleasant place to stay for a few days. The focal point is the Mahabodhi Temple, which marks the spot where Buddha attained enlightment and set out on his life of preaching. |

Pilgrims offer Pindas at the ghat along the river here and perform the lengthy circuit of the holy places around Gaya to free their ancestors from bondage to the earth. |
